Deterministic Test Data Without Boring Tests
Design deterministic UI test data, seed intentional randomness and keep failure reproduction straightforward.
Repeatable fixtures and explicit randomness controls let failures explain themselves.
Random data can widen coverage, but uncontrolled randomness destroys reproduction. A failed test should tell the next engineer exactly which state it exercised.
Make the default deterministic
Keep stable rows, timestamps and identifiers for the ordinary path. When randomness is the lesson, expose a seed or force parameter and print the chosen state in the failure output.
Separate two questions
- Does the UI handle many valid inputs?
- Does this exact regression stay fixed?
Property-based or seeded runs answer the first. A named fixture answers the second. Mixing them makes both harder to understand.
The Dynamic Content and Notification challenges are intentionally random, but each offers a URL control for CI. That pattern preserves the learning value without making the suite a slot machine.
